Hello, my name is Matthew Dubois. On January 20, 2026, I went to the hospital for what started as pain in my finger. I never imagined it would turn into a life-changing ordeal. After being admitted, I spent nine days in the hospital and underwent surgery for a severe infection—streptococcus pyogenes group A, also known as flesh-eating bacteria. Since then, my recovery has involved multiple follow-ups with wound care specialists, my surgeon, and nurses who visit my home three times a week for dressing changes. After being discharged, I was also on IV antibiotics for 21 days to fight the infection. While my healing is going well, the infection has caused the tendon in my finger to dry out and die, leaving me with little to no movement or function. My amputation is scheduled for Thursday, 2/26/26, and I’ll continue to be out of work for at least another month as I recover from surgery.

This experience has been overwhelming, not just physically and emotionally, but financially as well. I have been out of work for over a month and, without disability insurance, the medical bills and everyday living expenses are piling up quickly. I am doing everything I can to stay positive and focus on my recovery, but the financial strain is making it even harder to move forward.
