My name is Samantha and I am trying to raise funds so my husband, Matthew, will be eligible for a double lung transplant.
Matthew came down with Covid at the beginning of July, then went to the hospital on the morning of July 8th. He spent the next 6 days trying to get better, but since he has diabetes the infection continued to make breathing difficult. On the night of July 14th, Matthew was intubated, put on a ventilator, and taken to the ICU. Because the hospital he was at did not have enough beds or the proper equipment, he was transferred to St. Louis University Hospital on July 17th, and has been there since.
The doctors there put Matthew on an ECMO machine, to oxygenate his blood to give his lungs the chance to heal. With Covid, the usual healing time for lungs is 4-5 weeks. The healing on his lungs has been minimal to nonexistent.
Matthew is now fully awake and aware of his condition and we need help to get this transplant set in motion. Our family (me and our three kids) will have to relocate to whichever hospital accepts him. Right now we think it will be Northwestern in Chicago. These funds will allow us to relocate to Chicago, or wherever Matthew ends up, and prove to the hospital we can raise the funds to get the transplant done. Most hospitals and/or insurance companies want proof that 20% of the funds can be raised/provided if need be.
