If you don’t know me, my name is Matt Sykora and I am fundraising today to cover my cancer bills. The past seven years of my life have been extremely difficult, and I felt like I had no choice but to finally stop and ask for help so I can have a clean slate.
It all started when I was 15- my father was killed 100 yards from our house by a drunk driver on a Monday afternoon. From then on, everything in my life was turned upside down and hasn’t been the same. My family moved out of our childhood home because it was too traumatic being that close to the accident scene and instead went out west to Arizona. I finished my senior year of high school in a brand-new school in a brand-new state, missing out on all the activities that makes that last year of high school special for most people because I didn’t have the established friend groups like my peers did. After graduation I went to Arizona State University to study Construction Management, something I’ve always been passionate about thanks to my dad’s influence. But going to college so soon after the trauma was extremely difficult and I found myself suffering through depression. It kept me from going It kept me from going to class and doing daily functions, so this made it extra hard to focus on my studies. I was able to take control of the depression with medication from my doctor, and graduated from ASU in May 2020. I was so excited to get out in the world and start making it a better place for everyone utilizing my degree in construction, only to get struck with more detrimental news- I had cancer.
In August of 2020, on my birthday of all days, I was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I went through six long months of chemotherapy treatments battling this evil disease. To make matters worse, I was battling it during COVID so I had a compromised immune system during a global pandemic, meaning I had to go through everything alone. My family couldn’t accompany me to my treatments or my doctor’s appointments. It was an absolutely awful and isolating experience that no one should have to go through.
After many treatments and terrible days, I am extremely fortunate to say that I kicked cancer’s A$$ as of February 26th, 2021. But sadly, that was not the end of my struggles. As many of you know, cancer treatments are very expensive, and this doesn't include surgeries, hospital fees, medications, tests, labs, etc. As of right now, I am upwards of $300,000 in debt in medical bills alone. This doesn't include my college loans which are around $100,000. I am a very positive and outgoing person but I’d be lying if I said this hasn’t gotten the best of me lately. I try to help everyone as much as I can, and so I am humbly reaching out to our kind community in hopes for compassion and returning the favor. I am coming to you all as a last resort- I can barely make ends meet with my normal bills, and having this debt on top of me is drowning me, and I will never get ahead of this and leave this trauma in the past trying to handle it on my own.
Any donation is so helpful and greatly appreciated, as this feels like an impossible situation to get out of. All funds will be going towards paying my medical bills off so I can have a clean start to life again.
