My dad, Matt, has been battling kidney stones for the past 20 years. While he’s always managed to pass them, the pain has become a constant part of his life. Over the last six years, things have gotten much worse. He’s been in and out of doctor’s appointments, seeing specialists, and has even ended up in the ER three times in just four months because the pain is almost unbearable. Simple daily activities are a struggle for him now.

Unfortunately, his insurance doesn’t cover much. They’ve denied his surgeries twice, and he’s been left with huge co-pays for every appointment and specialist visit. Many of the tests and procedures his doctors recommend are denied outright, and he simply can’t afford to get them done. At one of his recent appointments, his doctor told him that his kidney stone is almost the size of his kidney—about 10cm, when most kidneys are only 11cm.

Between his regular bills and mounting medical expenses, everything is piling up. The pain keeps him from working enough to make ends meet, so he’s forced to choose between paying for daily living costs or his health bills.
