Matt Mara has been diagnosed with stage 4 head and neck cancer. At this point, the doctors at the Montgomery Cancer Center have told him it's terminal and he has 3 to 5 years to live. Matt has decided to fight this and has elected to go to MD Anderson in Houston, TX for treatment. Insurance has not yet approved this, but even when BCBS does approve this course, there will be a great deal of expense to the Mara family between travel expenses and the cost of treatment not covered by insurance. Treatment plan at the Montgomery a Cancer Center currently entails chemotherapy and will be followed by radiation.
UPDATE: Matt has an appointment with MD Anderson on August 18. He will fly out on the 16th and will remain until at least the 25th. During that time, MD Anderson will run their own tests, do biopsies of several tumors, reassess the prognosis, and make a treatment plan. Matt could be there up to 6 months depending on the treatment plan and progress. Lucy will work remotely and be with him throughout treatment. They have found a furnished apartment 5 minutes from the hospital which they will rent.
Matt's outlook is positive and full of hope. He is humbled by the love and support of family, friends, and complete strangers and is very thankful. Please keep him in your prayers and in your heart.
For those of you who know him, you know that Matt is a husband, father, fellow brother in blue, and loyal friend. He is the kind of man who would jump to help any one of us in need ourselves.
Please help him afford his cancer treatment.
