I am a PhD student at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA, raising funds for my dear friend, Md. Abdullah Al Masud, who is currently battling a life-threatening blood cancer—Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
Masud and I completed our Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the same university, and we even lived in the same room in our university dormitory. I know him not just as a friend, but as someone I have shared years of life with—his struggles, his dreams, his honesty, and his determination.
Masud is a recent graduate from the Department of Public Health and Informatics at Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh. He comes from a rural part of Mymensingh and has faced hardship from an early age, losing his father in childhood. Today, he is the only support for his elderly, sick mother.
Recently, Masud began a new chapter in his life through marriage. But before he could even settle into this new journey, he was diagnosed with AML, a devastating diagnosis that has turned his life upside down.
The Medical Situation
Masud’s treatment is:
- Long-term and extremely complex
- Highly expensive
- Urgently required to save his life
So far:
- Over 1 million BDT (~8164 USD) has already been spent at Ahsania Mission Hospital, Dhaka
- Around 700,000 BDT (~5715 USD) has been raised through crowdfunding
- Doctors now recommend a bone marrow transplant, which is his best chance of survival
He is expected to travel to India for this life-saving procedure. If a suitable donor is not found within his family, a donor will need to be arranged in India, which will significantly increase the cost.
Financial Need
The total estimated cost for treatment is approximately:
5,000,000 – 6,000,000 BDT (~41,000–57,000 USD)
Masud’s family is already trying everything they can, including selling their ancestral property. However, this is still far from enough to cover the treatment expenses.
