Help Mason beat the curve!

The Weygand Family needs your help!

Mason, son to Stephen and Alex, twin brother to his sister Mia, both age 6, is in need of your help to cover the extreme cost of a serious surgery required for him to live a happy and healthy life.

At age 2, Mason was diagnosed with Idiopathic Infantile Scoliosis. To many, scoliosis, or “curved spine” doesn’t appear to carry the weight that it truly does. Mason also has a hereditary connective tissue disorder called Marfan’s Syndrome. Often, children who have the group of “Connective Tissue Disorders” like Marfan’s can also have scoliosis or other skeletal abnormalities.

They discovered that Mason’s back looked very different around the time he was 18 months old. Following a series of visits to two pediatricians, two orthopedists, a pediatric chiropractor, a neurologist, and the hospital for MRIs and X-Rays, they were told that Mason had two large curves in his back and would need to wear a full-time cast in order to attempt to correct his curves.

From nearly the age of 3 until age 5, Mason wore ten different casts, undergoing anesthesia each time, traveling to and from Utah for 6 of them, and receiving his last 4 in Philadelphia after their family made a move to the East. During this time, he was not able to shower, take typical baths, or swim. They were thankful to have the option most recently for Mason to try a brace, which they could remove to restore movement, play, and normalcy, and although the brace brings a welcome degree of freedom, it also is not serving to correct his two large curves. It has held his two curves from progressing significantly, and the orthopedic surgeon in Philadelphia continues to be surprised that Mason has remained stable. They were told by their physicians that if the casts could not provide correction, Mason would eventually need surgery to correct his curves. From age 3, the time he received his first cast, to age 6, they are now at the point of needing to pursue surgery for their little guy.

Mason will undergo Anterior Scoliosis Correction (ASC) surgery on May 18th, 2022. They will travel to St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, for the procedure, at The Institute for Spine and Scoliosis.

The typical recovery time for ASC is six weeks. After Mason’s surgery on May 18th, he will remain in the hospital for 5-7 days. After the surgery, he will also have physical therapy until May 30th. Then they will finally get to drive back home to Pennsylvania once Mason is cleared.

We are asking for any donations to help offset the cost of his surgery and recovery.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity. Together, we can help make his life a little happier and a little easier.
