Hi - my name is Mary Cyr. My husband and I have struggled since my diagnosis of Myelodysplastic Syndrome High Risk (MDS) in September 2021. MDS is a type of bone marrow cancer that causes dangerously low white blood cells - that fight off infections- along with low platelets (that help the blood to clot). It also negatively effects red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body. I have had six rounds of chemo and had two hospitalizations. Without a bone marrow/stem cell transplant, I would have about a year to live. Since my brother was not a match, I have an international partial match. My donor is just 21 years old, but is “an enthusiastic donor” according to my doctor. I am currently scheduled for a transplant on April 27. My doctors are very optimistic this donor match will cure my disease. The week before my transplant, I will receive high doses of chemo and will find out how I look with a bald head. After the transplant- Ed and I must plan to stay within 10 minutes of Mayo Clinic Rochester for the next 100 days. With the help of my transplant team, we found Serenity Homes and have put a deposit down on a duplex. It is more expensive than the Gift of Life House- but doctors felt it best with my disease to not be in a congregate setting for eating or cooking. Ed will need to be with me at all times- as in I can’t be alone.
These fund will help with housing costs, medical bills, cleaning products, and other medical items Ed will need to care for me including a few caps for my bald head).
