In 2024, I faced a health scare that brought back painful memories—severe pain and blood in my urine led my doctor to order an MRI, especially since my father had just passed away from bladder cancer. The MRI revealed a kidney stone, which thankfully passed, but the scan itself was very expensive. With a high deductible on my employer-sponsored health insurance, I was left to pay the entire bill. I’ve been making monthly payments, but still owe a significant amount as of this month.

Things became even more challenging in 2025 when I got very sick with a virus that caused ten days of vomiting and diarrhea. As a diabetic, I was worried about complications, so my doctor ordered a stool sample. That test was another large out-of-pocket expense because my new insurance plan has a high deductible. I also needed an emergency eye exam for a possible retinal tear, which was costly since the only eye doctor in my small town is out of network. On top of these bills, my insurance premiums have increased, and I now pay more each month. As a single-income household caring for my disabled adult son, these expenses have become overwhelming.
