Help Mary Afford a Chance at Life

On May 13th, my mom was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, otherwise known as bile duct cancer. Cholangiocarcinoma is an extremely rare cancer that is only diagnosed about in 2000 people per year in the US. The average survival time is two years. Our oncologist currently estimates she has one year left.
The cancer is late staged and has currently invaded the local structures in the liver, and the surgeons at KU have deemed it too dangerous to operate on. Surgery is the only “cure” to this cancer and is the only way anyone can survive cholangiocarcinoma. We are currently looking to seek a second opinion at either Mayo Clinic or Barnes Jewish Hospital, who both specialize in performing curative surgery and potential liver transplant in late staged cholangiocarcinoma. However, they are out of network for our insurance, and require a $5,000 deposit to be even seen for the first appointment.
We cannot afford this deposit.
If you’ve known me for a while, you know that our entire family has been in debt and struggling to meet ends needs for essentially my entire life. We were never well off, and we normally never ask for any financial help. But with my mom disabled due to her extreme pain, my dad acting as a full time caretaker, and with me and my brother still as students, we have absolutely zero source of income for the indefinite future. To say I am frustrated and desperate is still a massive understatement of how I feel.
Before now, my mom was completely healthy with no health problems. This year, she just turned 56, and at this point my hope now is that she’ll finally be pain free and live to at least see me and my brother graduate. $5000 is the minimum we need for a fighting chance, and any more would also help cover the costs of chemotherapy, travel fees, medications, out-of-pocket expenses.
I will be writing frequent updates here on GoFundMe and be posting a lot. Please help support my mom by donating, sharing, or keeping us in your prayers. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
