Rachelle's Road to Recovery
Donation protected
Rachelle Abbott (26) experienced a life-altering asthma attack in Kodiak, Alaska September 6th 2020 after a successful summer of commercial fishing. To many an asthma attack may be scary, but can often be alleviated with a couple puffs of an inhaler. This wasn't the case for Rachelle. Shortly after her arrival at the hospital in Kodiak, Rachelle was found collapsed and unconscious by a nurse. After a 6 hour weather delay, she was medevacked to Anchorage, where she spent the next few months in and out of a medically induced coma to provide her brain some relief from frequent seizures. The doctors said that Rachelle experienced an anoxic brain injury and gave her a 0.1% chance of improvement.

Due to COVID-19, Rachelle's father, (Marvin), wasn't allowed to visit her in the ICU, but never left her side. He camped outside the hospital and spent his days praying for healing for his daughter.

Marvin declined putting Rachelle in a long-term care facility and has taken her care upon himself. He moved from Florida to Alaska with Rachelle's 9 year old daughter, Isabella, to be closer to Rachelle's doctors and family for support. His hope for improvement is unwavering.
Rachelle is now home, awake, and is making small improvements. She will follow people with her eyes and even smile or cry. The doctors and her family are able to see reactions from Rachelle when they interact with her that to others may be faint but to Rachelle's family it means more than they are able to put into words. Rachelle's daughter, Isabella, enjoys reading her mother stories as she sits beside her while her father, Marvin, has found comfort in getting to see his daughter smile and hold her hand. These moments are not only important for Rachelle's family but also for her healing and recovery.
Through this journey, Rachelle and her family's needs have significantly changed. With Rachelle's current condition, the need for a special vehicle and wheel chair have become more and more prominent. Currently, the only way to transport Rachelle is by ambulance. This morning (January 28th), Marvin noticed Rachelle's feeding tube was disconnected and had to call an ambulance to transport her to the hospital for it to be reconnected. The opportunity to be able to purchase a wheel chair and possibly a new vehicle would give Marvin the ability to transport Rachelle for any reason and would give Rachelle the ability to eventually participate in her family's lives outside of the home.
The First Rate Foundation of First Rate Financial has gladly donated $5,300 towards this cause. Our goal is to raise another $5,300 from the public to match this donation to help Rachelle and her family with unplanned expenses during a tough time. No amount is too small or too large. If you can't give at this time, please spread the word by sharing this message.
