My nephew is 48 years old, and doctors recently discovered an aneurysm on his aorta, along with a bicuspid valve condition that required a valve replacement. He underwent open heart surgery to address these life-threatening issues. While the surgery was successful, his recovery has been far more complicated than expected.
He is currently dealing with partial collapse of the lower portions of his lungs, which makes breathing and recovery even more difficult. He has now been in the hospital over 14 days, as doctors work to regulate his breathing and manage his pain. Each day has been physically and emotionally exhausting for him and our family. At this time, we are unsure how long he will need to remain hospitalized, as he continues to require close monitoring and care.
The financial impact has been overwhelming. The costs of a prolonged hospital stay, surgery, follow-up care, and medications are enormous. On top of that, he faces lost income while recovering and will need transportation for frequent follow-up appointments.
