Help Marty Move for Better Health

Donation protected
Over the last several years, Marty has faced some very serious health problems. To date, he has had 21 surgeries, which have significantly limited him and forced him into earlier retirement. This has depleted all of his resources. But, ever the optimist, Marty has decided that his current situation does not need to be his permanent situation, and he is planning a move to Malta!

Unfortunately, life has a way of laughing when we make plans. He meticulously planned for his living expenses, but was then informed that the entire year’s worth of taxes must be paid upfront. What was once a $20,000 budget (travel, residency fees, upfront housing and medical insurance costs, etc.), has now become $30,000. Additionally, the US dollar has taken quite a beating against the Euro in the last several months, further raising the cost. He would ideally like to move before Spring.

Malta has many advantages for Marty! The climate is much warmer than that in Central New York, with over 300 days of sunshine. Central New York’s winters are brutal, and his surgeries and injuries make it very difficult to withstand the cold. Malta’s health care is rated very highly internationally and is far less expensive than health care in the United States. The cost of living is also significantly less expensive than in the United States. English is an official language in Malta, so it will be easier to navigate day-to-day life and form a social circle. Marty has already performed at comedy shows in Malta and begun making friends in-person and through social media.

I’d like to share a personal story that exemplifies why I suggested that he create a GoFundMe. A few years ago, I was at the lowest point of my life. I was a sad, lonely mess, resistant to any help or love. Yet Marty stuck by me no matter how unworthy of help I believed myself to be. Marty asked me if I like helping other people. He knew the answer would be affirmative. He followed this question by saying, “Helping makes other people feel good, too. Why would you deny others the opportunity to help?”

Like me and countless others, Marty would prefer to be the provider of aid and support rather than the recipient, but if anyone deserves a little extra love and support, it’s him. He has been a mentor, a friend, a bright light in a dark world for so many people. For 40 years, he was a dedicated volunteer for the YMCA Youth & Government program in California. He has actively volunteered with a broad range of community organizations, such as theater for youth and adults, parent-teacher advisory boards, and fundraising for schools and various other causes. Marty shows up for any event or cause that he or his loved ones are championing. When I heard he was selling his possessions to help fund this move, I knew how serious his need was. If you are able and so inclined, please help our dear friend. We are trying to raise $10,000 to help him get to Malta by Spring. Any amount you can help with is deeply appreciated! And if you wouldn't mind, please share this with anyone who might know Marty!
