Dear friends,
As many of you know I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of urinary cancer in December of last year. I underwent multiple biopsies in January and was told that the cancer had spread to my lungs and liver.
On top of the cancer, we were informed by our landlords on the same day in January that they would not be renewing our lease and that we would have to move by July 1, 2024. This was 6 months after we initially moved in after we had lived in our previous home for 9 years.
We wrote back asking for a compassionate extension of the lease for a few months since I was in the middle of battling an aggressive cancer. The landlord simply refused our request and told us to be out by July 1.
Of course Katie and I were frightened and overwhelmed. I have been in the hospital and the ER six times since January, making the idea of finding an affordable place to live and carrying out a move by July 1 effectively impossible.
This was all happening as I became unable to work with my consulting clients because of the side effects of the treatments, and so Katie and I suddenly found our income drastically reduced and our expenses increasing rapidly.
To date the landlord has simply refused to talk with us and we are continuing to look for a compromise through our attorney and the courts. This means that in addition to attorneys fees, we will be looking for a new place to live, both of which will be a large financial burden.
I never thought I would be in this position, but many of you have told me to reach out if I ever needed help. I know that some of you do not have a lot of money while some have been more fortunate.
Please give what you can. We are grateful to all our friends for their support no matter how much they are able to give.
Thank you all so much.
Marty and Katie
