I’ll start by saying this is difficult for me, as I’m sure it is for most. Asking for help is something I am not always the best at. A few friends told me it’s ok to ask for, so here I go
9 years ago I was leaving a grocery store when I found a man with a momma dog, two living puppies and several puppies that had passed away. A friend involved in rescue helped me save this family of dogs and I ended up bottle raising a dog for the first time that day. Marley is a healthy happy boy as is his now grown sister (she lives with another adoptive family). Marley has been with me through some of the hardest times in my life and our relationship is pretty intense. He is what I call a Velcro dog and anyone who has seen me stream knows Marley is always there
A few weeks ago Marley somehow ended up with a hematoma on his ear. This is a fluid filled sac that isn’t completely dangerous but can become so. Originally it had started the process of going away on its own and my vet and I were content to let it. Unfortunately he shook too hard one day or traumatized it in some other way that is burst. That prompted the need for the first surgical procedure to insert a cannula to allow it to drain. Several days later (today) the hematoma was still not draining properly and Marley was showing signs of discomfort, anorexia and other issues that pointed to an unsuccessful procedure.
I called his vet this morning and was asked to come in to reevaluate. When we got there we went over Marley’s options and the best one for him was to remove most of his ear.
The cost of these surgeries is frankly, astronomical to me as a single person living alone in California. To say it was unexpected is an understatement . Marley is my son though, and I would eat cardboard before I could put him down over his ear.
We are home now and trying to digest these costs. I’ll include some of the payments here. I love my community and already feel very lucky to have so many people who support me. They told me it’s ok to ask for help. If you could, Marley and I would be forever grateful.
