Help our beloved friend Mark Hogan

*12/17/23 - Updated to reflect Mark's recent move to a board and care.

Mark Hogan is a 59 year-old San Diego native who loves surfing, his wife Dona and their dogs.

On November 22, 2023, Mark and Dona rushed to the emergency room, after routine tests (including a CT scan) showed concerning masses in multiple areas of his brain. Until that moment, Mark and Dona were looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family. They were not prepared for the devastating news.

At the ER, the neurologist found possible signs of cancer. Mark spent the next week in the hospital, where a biopsy confirmed he has an aggressive form of inoperable brain cancer. Mark was diagnosed with glioblastoma stage 4 terminal brain cancer. Glioblastomas are incredibly lethal, found almost exclusively in the brain and spinal cord. Mark has three massive tumors near his cerebellum. The tumors are growing at a rate of 1.4% per day. His ability to walk has already been affected. Due to the advanced stage of the brain cancer, doctors gave Mark zero chance of survival and estimated he only has three weeks left to live. Mark and Dona made the difficult decision to return home, as Mark’s last wish is to spend his remaining days surrounded by family and friends. Unfortunately, Mark's condition worsened and Dona had to make the heartbreaking decision to place Mark at a board and care near their home.

Mark is currently in hospice, as his condition continues to worsen. He was forced to medically retire from his job with the City of Carlsbad. Dona is unable to work, due to managing Mark's care and providing him comfort during this difficult time. This has put a tremendous financial strain on Mark and Dona.

Mark’s hospice care is now being paid by insurance however the board and care along with the home health are not covered by his insurance provider. Mark's ambulance transport to the board and care is also not covered. He is also too young to receive Medicare. Mark’s needs are currently being addressed through the limited guidelines of hospice allowances, leaving his wife to shoulder most of the financial burden of this devastating situation.

Please consider donating to help support Mark's care. Your donation will help cover Mark's outstanding hospital bills as well as immediate medical needs. Your contribution will help ease the financial burden for Mark and his family, so they can instead focus on being together during his last days.

Thank you for considering helping Mark and Dona.
