Mark O’Connor, 62, is from Marblehead, Massachusetts. Mark was a top tier skier and a top tier sailor his entire life. He was healthy, happy, and never smoked. He was diagnosed with Wagner’s Disease over one year ago.
It is a very difficult disease to diagnose so by the time it was discovered the damage had already been done. Without medical treatment the diagnosed person has a very high risk of dying from the disease within two years, usually from lung or kidney failure.
Unfortunately Mark now has total renal failure and spends four days a week five hours a day in dialysis to keep him alive while he fights to receive a kidney transplant. The average wait in the State of Massachusetts for a kidney is 5-7 years, which is not very encouraging. Due to his constant treatment he is unable to keep working therefore his economic situation is dire.
The insurance issues are also another burden. Due to the exorbitant costs of the treatments Mark has forced him to turn to his savings accounts, which are all but depleted.
Mark has four beautiful young children and has tried to do all he can to make their lives as normal as possible. His wife has been very supportive but given her job she is constantly traveling which leaves Mark a very stressful life. Medical costs are constantly causing stress and anxiety. As we all know medical conditions such as this is one of the major reason for bankruptcies today.
I am asking all of you who know Mark and those who don’t to please donate whatever you can to help keep him in treatment until hopefully he is lucky enough to receive a donated kidney to save his life. Make no mistake this is a life or death situation and I hope we all can do what we can to make it life. Those of us who know Mark are doing everything we can but we need more help. Please send this on to your friends and then have them send it on to their friends. Anything helps.
