Help Mark adjust to life as a paraplegic

This fundraiser is being created to help our father, Mark Oman, with financial expenses associated with a spinal cord injury, leaving him paralyzed and unable to return to work.

On March 31st, 2022, our dad, Mark, went to the ER with excruciating low-back and low-abdominal pain. After suddenly losing all feeling/movement from the waist down, an MRI identified an infection on his spinal cord, requiring an emergency surgery to relieve the pressure and hopefully regain function. Unfortunately, the compression of his spinal cord severely damaged his nerves, leaving my father paralyzed. He has been unable to return to work, his temporary disability has run out, and Social Security has not provided an update/approval of his permanent disability application as of yet. As of now, he has no income, and his bank accounts have been depleted.

After 3.5 months in the hospital, he was finally accepted into Kessler’s Spinal Cord Injury program in West Orange, NJ, where he received acute rehabilitation for 5 weeks. While regaining function again is unlikely, during his stay at Kessler, he participated in essential therapies and rehabilitation to adapt to life as a paraplegic.

Now, after almost 5 months in the hospital and rehab, our dad returned home on August 25th, the day before his 60th birthday. He is learning to adjust to his new life but with that comes major financial challenges that are affecting his emotional health and ability to move forward.

He has a very long road ahead of him, but with your help, we can take some of the financial burden off of his shoulders and allow him to focus on his health and continue to progress in his rehabilitation.
