Many in Elliot Lake will recognize Marjorie from Shoppers Drug Mart, where she’s known for her friendly smile and quick “hello.” She has spent her entire life in this community, always showing up for others, whether through her work or her many years of volunteering.

Just one week after celebrating her 65th birthday, on March 21, Marjorie’s life changed suddenly.

A fire caused by an aging dryer in her home left her seriously injured. She was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where she was placed on a ventilator due to smoke inhalation and treated for significant burns to her right foot. After weeks in hospital, she has now been transferred to a rehabilitation centre, where she is working hard every day to regain her mobility.

Marjorie is expected to be discharged in early May, but her recovery is far from over. She is not yet walking independently and will require ongoing care and support as she heals.

Marjorie lives in the home she grew up in, a place filled with a lifetime of memories. While insurance will cover repairs related to the fire, there is still a significant amount of work needed to make the home safe, comfortable, and ready for her return. As her neighbours, we want to make sure she has the support she needs during this incredibly difficult time.

Because of her injuries, Marjorie will be unable to work for the foreseeable future. She will be facing everyday expenses without her regular income, along with the added challenges that come with recovery.
