Maritza & Jorge Lost Everything After Ida in NJ

Hello, my name is Elena Wachong, Ambassador of Costa Rica. I'm raising funds for my dear friend Maritza and her husband Jorge Vargas, who lost almost everything when Hurricane Ida hit. Maritza was asleep when their apartment was flooded by the Raritan River in New Jersey. Around 5:00 am she woke up in the flood, floated out in her pajamas into her living room, had water up to her neck and was drowning, when the emergency boat picked her up. The car, refrigerator, and kitchen stove floated away along with Maritza and Jorge's passports, credit cards, furniture, and clothes. Husband Jorge had left an hour earlier to help friends whose home had been flooded overnight--he had no idea that that was going to happen to his own home an hour later! He was left with his clothes and the used car he drives for Über.

In this video (taken by their upstairs neighbor), the rescue boat is floating close to the light above the entrance to their main door. The boat is floating about 8 feet above ground, close to their living room's ceiling level.

Maritza moved from Costa Rica to Bound Brook, NJ, 15 years ago. She and Jorge were married 10 years ago. Today she is 60 years old and Jorge is 65. They lived in a ground floor apartment 4 blocks from the Bound Brook railroad station, where the Bound Brook creek meets the Raritan River.

Maritza was my Dad's cook and housekeeper for the last 20 years of his life. I have known Maritza since she was 16 years old. She graduated from high school in Costa Rica and later worked for me. She has always loved cooking and also enjoys taking care of babies and children.

 

Maritza has a job at a hotel, but she is ready and willing to work as a housekeeper, cook (she's a great cook), or nanny for a family or company that can provide living quarters. She is extremely hard working, honest, and responsible. Jorge is also ready and willing to work as a driver and handyman.

 

Meanwhile, they need help to get back on their feet and start over after the trauma of the hurricane. They've lost so much. Thank you  for considering making a donation.

Hola, mi nombre es Elena Wachong, Embajadora de Costa Rica. Estoy recaudando fondos para mi querida amiga Maritza y su esposo Jorge Vargas, quienes perdieron casi todo cuando azotó el huracán Ida. Maritza estaba dormida cuando su apartamento fue inundado por el río Raritan en Nueva Jersey. Alrededor de las 5:00 am se despertó en la inundación, flotó en pijama hasta la sala de estar, tenía agua hasta el cuello y se estaba ahogando cuando el bote de emergencia la recogió. El auto, el refrigerador y la estufa de la cocina se alejaron flotando junto con los pasaportes, tarjetas de crédito, muebles y ropa de Maritza y Jorge. El esposo Jorge se había ido una hora antes para ayudar a unos amigos cuya casa se había inundado durante la noche; ¡no tenía idea de que eso le sucedería a su propia casa una hora después! Se quedó con su ropa y el auto usado que maneja para Über.

En este video (tomado por su vecina de arriba), el bote de rescate flota cerca de la luz sobre la entrada de su puerta principal. El barco está flotando a unos 8 pies sobre el suelo, cerca del nivel del techo de su sala de estar.

Maritza se mudó de Costa Rica a Bound Brook, New Jersey, hace 15 años. Jorge y ella se casaron hace 10 años. Hoy ella tiene 60 años y Jorge 65. Vivían en un apartamento en la planta baja a 4 cuadras de la estación de ferrocarril Bound Brook, donde el arroyo Bound Brook se encuentra con el río Raritan.

Maritza fue la cocinera y ama de llaves de mi papá durante los últimos 20 años de su vida. Conozco a Maritza desde que tenía 16 años. Se graduó de la escuela secundaria en Costa Rica y luego trabajó para mí. Siempre le ha gustado cocinar y también le gusta cuidar a bebés y niños.

Maritza tiene trabajo en un hotel, pero está lista y dispuesta a trabajar como ama de llaves, cocinera (es una gran cocinera) o niñera para una familia o empresa que pueda proporcionarle alojamiento. Ella es extremadamente trabajadora, honesta y responsable. Jorge también está listo y dispuesto a trabajar como conductor y personal de mantenimiento.

Mientras tanto, necesitan ayuda para volver a ponerse de pie y empezar de nuevo después del trauma del huracán. Han perdido tanto. Gracias por considerar hacer una donación.
