Marieta, our friend and colleague, a compassionate and supportive mental disability rights advocate in Armenia, has been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, which requires a long and costly treatment.
She is presently undergoing chemotherapy, which will be followed by breast surgery. While she is being able to cope with the chemotherapy expenses, she is unable to afford paying for the two main and very expensive medications she has just been prescribed. The total cost of these two medications amounts to $57,000. One of them (Herceptin) is absolutely necessary, the price for one ampoule is $1,200 in Armenia and she needs 10 ampoules of it. The other medication (Perjeta), which is crucial to ensuring her recovery, costs $2,500 per ampoule. She will need 17 ampoules of this medication. Both are urgent! Right now she spends $7,000 per month for both chemotherapy and medication, which is a very heavy financial burden for her and her family. Their combined monthly income is a fraction of this amount.
