Mariel Rodriguez is a remarkable young community advocate who has dedicated years to civic engagement and anti-gun violence work in Philadelphia. As my mentee, I have watched her grow into a leader who inspires her peers and community members to get involved, vote, and make a difference. Mariel’s journey began with a personal tragedy—she lost her father to gun violence at a young age. Instead of letting this loss define her, Mariel transformed her pain into purpose, becoming an anti-violence advocate and a voice for change.
Throughout high school, Mariel interned with organizations like Philly BOLT, The Civics Center, and PA Youth Vote, all of which work to educate our community about voting and advocacy. She served as a civic engagement ambassador at Academy at Palumbo, leading her school to achieve one of the highest student voter registration rates in the city. Mariel’s speeches and organizing efforts have inspired countless peers to see the importance of policy engagement and community involvement. Her resilience and commitment remind me—and so many others—that even in the face of loss, it’s possible to fight for a better future.
Now, Mariel is preparing to attend Penn State, but she needs support to purchase a laptop for college. This laptop will ensure she has the tools and resources needed to succeed academically and continue her advocacy work. After years of giving back to her community, it’s our turn to pour back into her. Please consider donating to help Mariel start her next chapter strong and continue making a positive impact. Your support will help her thrive in college and empower her to keep inspiring change.
