Family and friends. First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to read this because as I have come to learn time is so precious. This fund raiser is to help my dear friend, Maribel, as her worst fear became a reality on September 27, 2022, when she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
A few weeks prior to her diagnosis Maribel was at her routine annual exam when her doctor felt a lump. Her doctor immediately sent her for a mammogram, ultrasound, and ultimately a biopsy which revealed the results. Luckily, through her routine annual exam, doctors are confident that the cancer has been caught early and treatable.
Maribel was diagnosed with what is called triple negative, Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma. A type of breast cancer that is in the milk duct. Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma is the most common type of breast cancer, making up nearly 70-80% of all breast cancer diagnosis. Triple negative breast cancer is known to come on fast and strong.
Since the time of her diagnosis Maribel has had a lot of doctor’s appointments, genetic testing, biopsies, blood work of all sorts, MRIs. In addition, she has a lot more appointments coming to include having surgery on 10/21/22 to have a port placed in her chest to start chemo. She will also in conjunction with chemo have immunotherapy. The goal is to shrink the tumor with these treatments. After 12 weeks of chemo and immunotherapy the plan is to have the tumor removed and then start radiation treatments. As I’m sure many of you are aware, any type of medical treatment is expensive, and it adds up…very fast. Maribel has also had to take time off work for doctor’s appointments and will have to take time off when she starts chemo treatments, which does not decrease the financial burden. Maribel has a six-year-old daughter and is the main financial provider for her family.
Maribel has a challenging road ahead of fighting. Her faith in God, strength, love from her husband and daughter, and amazing family and friends will get her through this difficult journey ahead. You don’t get to pick and chose what happens to you, but you get to choose how to respond… Maribel chooses life, she chooses to fight, she chooses to embrace her reality and keep going forward with her head held high. She WILL beat cancer!!!
1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. It can be your wife, sister, daughter, mother, cousin, aunt, friend, niece, grandma. PLEASE do your-self breast exams. Get your mammograms. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized state, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Early detection is key.
Again, thank you, and any little bit can help.
