My father has always been the strong one in our family, but everything changed when he came back from a recent trip barely able to walk. Right now, he’s in the hospital receiving a blood transfusion, and doctors had to repair a ruptured hernia before they could even begin to address his other health issues. He’s been out of work for a year because of these ongoing problems, and now he’s run out of money to cover even the basics.

As if that wasn’t enough, our family has been hit with even more heartbreak. My father just lost his mother, and not long after, his father-in-law passed away. Now, my mother-in-law is in the ICU. It’s been overwhelming to see my dad—who’s always been so healthy—suddenly facing so much all at once. I never imagined I’d be spending nights in the hospital with him instead of my mom.
