Hello, my name is Mariana Kayano-Leal and I'm a student filmmaker based in Paris from Brazil. I'm a student at Paris College of Art and Emerson College and for my thesis will be directing a short film that encapsulates my artistry. My practice explore the strained relationship between the First World and the Third World through the opposition between the characters and their surroundings, and concurrently, how the women's interpersonal relationships are affected when being perceived differently based solely on their appearance, namely the colour of their skin or how they're dressed. With this film I hope to poke at this sensitive and relevant topic of immigration, racial discrimination and community which affect so many parallel realities across the globe.
Faced with the current and global socio-political dynamics, where it becomes noticeable a trend of radical polarized hatred amongst different social groups, the film creates itself from a sentiment of resistance and deep nuisance of this reality. Being from Brazil, a part of the Third World, and currently living in France, a part of the First World, I find myself constantly suspended in limbo, between the ideas of superiority and inferiority. Perhaps inconspicuous to the eyes of the first world, micro aggressions, on a grand scale, can feed into problematic and hateful beliefs. I’m inviting anyone who feels connected to this project to support its creation, and I truly hope the finished film resonates with you.
Your contribution will directly help me pay for transportation, wardrobe, on set meals, production design, and equipment. Each donation brings me one step nearer to finishing my thesis and graduating.
By supporting this project, you’re contributing to my artistic development and the foundation of my future career. Thank you for your generosity and I can’t wait to share the finished film with you.
