Mariam has been a fighter since birth. She was born with sickle cell anemia and has endured a lifetime of pain, countless hospital visits, surgeries, and blood exchanges. Through it all, she held on to hope for a better future.

Four years ago, Mariam received a bone marrow transplant that brought that hope to life—but complications quickly followed. She was diagnosed with cancer, developed serious kidney issues, and ultimately, the transplant failed. Her sickle cell symptoms returned, more aggressively than before.

In the past year, Mariam’s health has taken a drastic turn. She’s developed dangerous blood clots in multiple organs, severe strain on her heart, and progressive organ failure. She can no longer manage basic daily tasks and now depends on oxygen support 24/7.

Her condition—Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH)—is life-threatening. CTEPH is caused by blood clots that turn into scar tissue in the lungs, blocking blood flow and leading to heart failure. Without surgery, most patients don’t survive more than five years. Mariam has already been living with CTEPH for two.

Now, she has a rare opportunity: a life-saving surgery scheduled for May 26th in Toronto. She and her mother will fly from Calgary on May 20th in hopes that this operation will give her a second chance at life.

Mariam’s mother, Joumana, has been her full-time caregiver for the past four years, unable to work due to Mariam’s critical needs. Her father—who suffered a heart attack two years ago—remains in Wabasca, working to keep the household afloat.

The financial burden on the family is overwhelming. They are juggling medical expenses, travel expenses, and the cost of living in multiple cities during this critical time.
