Help Mariah and James with Unimaginable Loss

Donation protected
Mariah was a senior at Rowan University. James, her younger brother, was a typical seventh grader when they lost everything.

Last year:
February, their mother (Mariah’s best friend) lost her long battle with breast cancer
July, their home was devastated by fire
November, their father (James’ hero) died suddenly from heart failure
The limited insurance was exhausted in December, and they had nowhere to live.

Currently, these siblings are in their third temporary living arrangement with James’ friend from middle school. Mariah, now her brother’s legal guardian, is taking classes while working full-time. She’ll start a new entry-level job at a law firm in a few weeks.

Staying in the Cherry Hill district so James can finish at the same middle school is vital to maintain stability. We found an average apartment in the area that they cannot afford without help.

Their pro bono attorney has advised the complex legal issues related to their losses will likely leave the estate with more debt than assets.

We have spent significant time getting to know Mariah and James. Mariah is very motivated to overcome these obstacles and is currently working with mental health, credit, and housing counselors to be prepared to provide James with their own secure, healthy home.

James relies on his sister for everything and is always worried about her daily stress. Yet, he has an infectious smile that is easily shared despite the tremendous loss. They embody everything we all try to teach our children - respect, the value of education, loyalty, hard work, sacrifice, and faith. They need our help.

The initial fundraising goal is to offset the current monthly rent, purchase furniture and household items, and secure a sustainable, affordable life for these two incredibly resilient young people this year. If we’re lucky enough to surpass our goal, the money raised will help secure permanent housing until James graduates high school and establish a scholarship fund for him. A committee will oversee the funds considering Mariah and James's short/long-term interests.

$50 buys school supplies, $100 helps with utilities, $200 buys groceries, $500 buys clothing, $750 helps with car insurance, and $1000 makes rent affordable for one month.
