Help Maria Del Carmen Nieves Through Her Liver Transplant Journey

My mom, Maria Del Carmen Nieves, fell suddenly and seriously ill at the end of April. One week she was fine, and the next our whole family was trying to understand what was happening to her. Since then, life has completely changed.

She's now waiting for a liver transplant. Because of her condition and her doctors' restrictions, she hasn't been able to work since late April, and she won't be able to return for a long while as she waits for surgery and then recovers from it. Her body simply can't keep up the way it used to right now.

The costs have added up fast, and these are the numbers even with insurance. The ambulance that transferred her from Oroville to San Francisco was $3,300 on its own. Her three-and-a-half-week hospital stay came to $6,012. The transplant itself will be another $5,500. On top of that, our family has been driving back and forth between Live Oak and San Francisco for weeks, and the gas alone has been a steady drain. Once the transplant happens, we'll need to rent a room in San Francisco to be near her care, which runs about $1,500 a month.

We're asking for help covering these costs: the ambulance and hospital bills, the travel, the housing in San Francisco, and the months of rent and living expenses she'll need to get through while she can't work. Our goal of $25,000 reflects what it will take to get her through the transplant and the recovery that follows.

If you're able to give anything at all, it means more than we can say. And if you can't give but can share this with people who might, that helps just as much. Every bit brings Maria Del Carmen closer to getting better and getting home.

Thank you for all your love and support for my mom and our family.
