Hello! My name is Maria Thomas, and I need your help with taking the next step in my martial arts journey and becoming the best instructor that I can be. For a passionate, career-oriented Martial Artist like myself, this is similar to going back to college for a Master’s Degree!
I’ve been teaching since I first tested for Black Belt back in 2004, and have been training since 1999. Now, 10 years after my 3rd degree test, I’m ready to begin the two year testing process for my 4th degree Master’s rank. As you might imagine, eligibility for this program is based on an invitation-only process. Although I’ve been invited in the past, I was unable to attend due to financial and health issues. But this year, I’m determined to make it happen!
I created this fundraiser because this test will include all the financial obligations associated with:
-3 Cross-country trips, beginning this March
-2 Week-long training and evaluation seminars
-Travel to and participation in 3-5 tournaments, including the WTSDA World Championships,
-Testing fees and gear and uniform expenses
I would be immensely grateful for any amount of assistance that you may be able to provide because this all adds up alarmingly fast! Luckily, small bits of help add up equally fast, so even $1 or $5 donations are both helpful and deeply appreciated.
By investing in my journey you’ll not only be helping me, but you’ll also be creating a ripple effect as I bring back everything I learn to benefit all the communities that I am a part of. Teaching has consistently been one of the most rewarding things in my life, and I’m excited to go after skills and experiences that will allow me to pass on the very best to my students. I’ll keep you updated with pictures, videos, and news about my training, travel, and tournament experiences. The more people that can “join” me on this crazy ride, the better!
Asking for help has always been an intimidating prospect, but giving back to my community is profoundly important to me. In 2019, I developed several extensive sets of flashcards for the Korean terminology used by the World Tang Soo Do Association (I went through ALL the textbooks and gathered all the terminology I could find). They’ve been awesome to have in class for drills and games and students have enjoyed using them as tools for test prep. My goal when designing these flashcards was to create something that people would WANT to get out and handle--motivation to study. ;)
So here, I would like to offer these cards as a “Thank You.” For every $25 that you donate, I would love to email you the file for one of the card packages in the pictures below (please specify which pack[s] you would like when you make your donation). You’ll receive a PDF file that has all the cards in each set laid out 2 cards to a page. All you have to do is print them and cut them out--I hope they serve you well!
Thank you for taking the time to read this and consider my request. I’m lucky to be a part of multiple amazing communities which have shown me that while some of life’s challenges may seem unattainable as an individual, virtually anything is possible when we work together!
