Hi, my name is Maria Perez, and I’m reaching out during the most heartbreaking time of my life.

My partner, Demetre Martinez, passed away on Monday, September 8. Demetre was not only my boyfriend — he was “Papi” of our two beautiful babies, an 8 month-old and a 22 month-old, and a loving father figure to my 5-year-old son, who has known and loved him since he was just 2 years old. He lived for his kids and was always there with open arms, a warm heart, and endless patience. He cared deeply about everyone around him — family, friends, and even strangers. His smile could light up a room, and his kindness left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

We built a life and a family together. Our children have lost their papi, and I’ve lost the love of my life.

Because I was not married to Demetre, I do not qualify for any financial assistance from the Marine Corps. They also will not cover any expenses for my son, even though Demetre raised him as his own.

I'm asking for help to cover travel expenses so I can bring our children and myself to say our final goodbyes. Any extra funds will go directly toward his funeral arrangements that do not get covered, to give him the goodbye he truly deserves.
