I first met Maria before the pandemic began – over two years ago. She was living in a tent under the overpass of the 134 Freeway off ramp in Eagle Rock. I’m sure many of you have seen the homeless encampment as you drive by. I’d see her sweeping the street and attending to her two dogs. I often stopped to ask if she needed anything and would give her some money, food, and other supplies. She was always very grateful and sweet. I know very little about her story.

Maria has no teeth. I have often wondered how she wound up homeless and toothless. Maria is still living off the freeway ramp but was forced to move to the vacant lot where other homeless individuals have their tents. The heat is unbearable because there is no shade.

She receives only $291/month from the State plus food stamps. Her two dogs have since died, but she has a puppy to keep her company.

We are trying to raise money for a full set of dentures for Maria, which might help her to eventually find work. My dentist in Glendale, Dr. Jennifer Herbert, has kindly offered to fit her with dentures pro bono. However, the lab cost to make them is $800.

If you can, please help us get Maria a new set of teeth by contributing to this fund – any amount helps. Any money raised beyond the $800 will go directly towards helping Maria to find housing.
