Help Maria Eduarda Fight Lupus and Kidney Failure

This is my little sister, Maria Eduarda. She’s 10 years old and lives in Brazil. In October 2024, she was diagnosed with stage 4 Lupus Nephritis — a severe form of lupus that attacks vital organs, especially the kidneys.

Since then, everything has changed. Lupus has damaged over 90% of her kidney function, and now she’s living with chronic kidney failure. She has to undergo dialysis three times a week, and it’s been incredibly hard on her. She often has high fevers, intense pain, and has already had two infections caused by the catheter in her chest (Permcath).

She’s just a kid, but her days revolve around hospitals, medication, and pain.

Right now, she urgently needs surgery to place a fistula in her arm — a safer, more permanent option for dialysis. This will not only make her current treatment safer, but it’s also essential for her to continue dialysis long-term while she waits for a kidney transplant. With this surgery, she’ll be able to have more stable treatments and finally go back to school, see her friends, and start living more like a kid again.

Unfortunately, the Brazilian public healthcare system denied the surgery because she’s under 14 years old. So now, we’re trying to do it through a private hospital. Our mom is terrified she’ll get another infection if we keep waiting.

To make things even harder, Maria lives three hours away from the dialysis clinic. That means Maria has to travel six hours round trip, three times a week, just to receive her treatment.

We’re raising money to help cover the costs of the surgery, ongoing treatment, travel, and to give Maria a better quality of life while she waits for a kidney transplant.

Essa é a minha irmãzinha, Maria Eduarda. Ela tem 10 anos e mora no Brasil. Em outubro de 2024, ela foi diagnosticada com Lúpus Nefrite em estágio 4 — uma forma grave da doença que ataca órgãos vitais, principalmente os rins.

Desde então, tudo mudou. O lúpus comprometeu mais de 90% da função dos rins dela, e agora ela vive com insuficiência renal crônica. Ela precisa fazer hemodiálise três vezes por semana, e tem sido extremamente difícil. Ela sente muitas dores, tem febres frequentes e já teve duas infecções graves causadas pelo cateter no peito (Permcath).

Ela é só uma criança, mas os dias dela giram em torno de hospitais, medicamentos e sofrimento.

Neste momento, ela precisa com urgência fazer uma cirurgia para colocar uma fístula no braço — uma opção mais segura e permanente para a hemodiálise. Isso não só tornaria o tratamento atual mais seguro, como também é essencial para que ela continue fazendo hemodiálise a longo prazo, enquanto espera por um transplante de rim. Com essa cirurgia, ela poderá ter um tratamento mais estável, voltar a estudar, rever os amigos e ter uma infância mais próxima do normal.

Infelizmente, o sistema público de saúde no Brasil negou o procedimento porque ela tem menos de 14 anos. Por isso, estamos tentando realizar a cirurgia em um hospital particular. Nossa mãe está com muito medo de que ela tenha mais uma infecção se continuarmos esperando.

Para piorar, Maria mora a três horas da clínica onde ela faz a hemodiálise. Ou seja, a Maria precisa viajar seis horas (ida e volta), três vezes por semana, para conseguir fazer o tratamento.

Estamos arrecadando dinheiro para ajudar com os custos da cirurgia, do tratamento contínuo, das viagens e para garantir uma vida melhor para a Maria enquanto ela espera por um transplante.
