Title: From ICU to Homeless: Help Me Rebuild After a Medical Crisis
My name is Mari Chapman. I am 60 years old, disabled, and have lived courageously with Lupus since 1994. I have always pushed forward through pain, mobility challenges, and adversity but nothing prepared me for what began in September 2024.
What started as repeated “colds” became months of illness, exhaustion, and worsening symptoms. By November 2025, after battling COVID, the flu, pneumonia, heart arrhythmia (dysrhythmia), and unexplained complications, I was hospitalized in critical condition. I went into cardiogenic shock, was rushed to the ICU, placed on life-saving medications, underwent multiple heart procedures, and nearly died.
During the many months I spent in the hospital and rehabilitation, I experienced not only physical trauma, but profound emotional abandonment. My husband rarely visited me. Our phone calls were brief and provided little comfort. I faced organ failure, invasive treatments, and feared for my life largely without support from my spouse]]
After losing 60 pounds and enduring months of hospitalization and recovery, I was finally discharged in late January 2026, hoping to return home and begin healing.
Instead, I arrived to find my home unlivable.
My car was damaged, disabled and blocking access to my home. Trash filled the driveway and yard. Upon entering and viewing my home, the ambulance transport team and police reported that there was trash throughout the house, and my belongings were disturbed. My wheelchair could not navigate through the debris. It was determined that I could not safely remain there. I was transported back to the hospital, suddenly homeless.
After surviving organ failure and nearly losing my life, I am now facing recovery without stable housing, proper medical equipment, or financial security, and without the spouse I thought I could rely on. My husband and I are separated and going through a divorce.
I am asking for help to cover:
• Temporary housing
• Medical equipment (walker, shower chair, mobility aids)
• Medications and medical expenses
• Transportation
• Basic living needs during recovery
• Accessibility modifications
Your support will help me heal safely, regain stability, and rebuild my life after unimaginable loss. Any donation, share, or message of encouragement truly means more than I can express.
With gratitude and love,
Mari
