Margo’s mom frequently shares facts about Down Syndrome. Children with Down Syndrome are more likely to develop leukemia when compared to children who do not have an extra chromosome.
Our precious Margo is now fighting a battle that no child should have to fight. On Sunday, 11/21/21, Margo went to the emergency room, and the family was given startling and devastating news- it appeared Margo has leukemia. Shortly thereafter, it was confirmed that Margo indeed has leukemia and became part of the devastating statistic of developing leukemia with Down Syndrome. Now her parents are living a parent’s worst nightmare. Margo is resilient and has begun taking treatment head-on. Margo has even enrolled in a clinical trial to help further research to help other children in the future.
Margo is the sweetest 2-year-old. She has an infectious smile. She recently became a proud big sister and has a baby brother that she fiercely loves. Just as fiercely as Margo loves, she has parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends near and far that love her just as immensely.
The family is shocked, saddened, and rearranging life as they knew it so they can provide the best support for Margo. There are many unknowns at this time. BUT- We do know that we can expect Margo to go through treatment for about 2 years. Sometimes treatments can be multiple times a week. The medical center for treatment is over 100 miles round trip. This means there will be a lot of driving and overnight stays for Margo and her parents. Her mother will be away from work, and without a salary, so Margo can be provided with the support she deserves in this critical time.
As Margo’s family has organized to face the challenges ahead, we have organized to support them. Cancer treatment takes a financial, physical, and emotional toll. Margo has massive social support, and many have asked how they could help. Providing some financial relief will allow her parents to focus on Margo during treatment. Any donation is greatly appreciated and helps relieve some of the financial stress. Let’s do what we can do as a community to help Margo and her family so they can focus on the most important thing- getting Margo better. I am asking with the greatest humility to consider helping. Anything big or small is appreciated.
The foreseeable costs include both medical and daily cost of living:
Gas driving to treatment to UC Davis
Parking fees at UC Davis
Copays
Deductibles
Mortgage
Utilities
Groceries
If you prefer to donate gift cards for food, gas, etc. the following is a list of ideas on what would be helpful and convenient for the family:
Sam’s club
Target
Walmart
Save Mart
Bel Air
We know the holidays are coming up, and that alone can be stressful for some. So, if you cannot donate, please pray for Margo and her family as any and all love and support is needed and welcomed. Positive thoughts, prayers, and energy are needed and appreciated during this time.
