My name is Marcus Jamison and I am a Ph.D. student at Howard University pursuing a degree in African American Literature. I have completed all coursework and will advance to full candidacy at the end of the upcoming semester. I began this amazing journey in 2021 but funding has been a challenge every year of my attendance. After a rocky period that included living in hotels and hostels, as well as depending on family and friends for support, I was able to find a steady teaching job that helped tremendously. Most years, even if it is a struggle, I have been able to manage. 2025 was particularly difficult because I was unable to secure a teaching job through local universities as I have done so in the past. Finding other employment was rough at first and I worked a variety of grueling jobs just to make ends meet. Unfortunately, between the end of April and the second week of July, I found myself without a paycheck for the first time in years, and I fell far behind on all of my bills, including my rent. I am fortunate to have a landlord who has been understanding because without her I fear I would be in a much worse situation. I recently started working a warehouse job with 10 hour shifts. Slowy I have put a dent into what I owe, but I am still more than 2 months behind. In August, I am hopeful that I will begin teaching again and can better support myself as I prepare to become a full candidate and prepare for dissertation. While I am excited about what the future holds academically, the financial uncertainty makes it hard to look too far ahead. I have been fortunate to encounter some wonderful people who have helped me along this journey. I am grateful for all of the Howard University faculty and staff who have supported me since day one, and thankful for my peers in the English Department for helping me stay encouraged. I would also thank the community of poets and creative writers in DC and across the country for being a beautiful distraction during a difficult time. For everyone who has helped in any way, you are appreciated.
I am setting this goal of $5,000 because it will not only help me cover the past due balances I owe in rent and utilities, but it will also help support me and my family until I can secure a teaching job in August/September. I understand that we live in a crazy world and so many of us are going through things. If you are able to give, I am thankful, but if not please simply spread the word to someone who might be able to. Howard University has taught me to continue to persevere and pursue excellence in all things, even when times are most difficult. I hope, with your help, I can continue to live up to this standard.
