I live in a small, coastal town in northern California. One of the main
attractions to visitors in our area is a steam train called the Super Skunk that
travels through the scenic redwoods between Ft. Bragg and Willits, charming and
thrilling the thousands of passengers who ride it annually. But the history of
its origin and the hard-working folks that made the dream into a reality is
getting lost - to visitors and residents alike.
Since I was raised in this small community, I remember the events that took
place at its creation and feel inspired to preserve it in this children's book. I
found a talented, young artist to illustrate the pages, got permission from the
railroad itself (although NO proceeds from GoFundMe will go to them), and set out to
spread the word.
As an elementary school teacher myself, I know how children are fascinated by
the world around them, so my hope is to open the world of the railroad to them
in a way that is both informative and entertaining. The story was developed
from interviews with personal friends who worked the railroad so all of the
incidents described in it actually happened.
Production costs are steep, however, so I'm asking for any amount of support
from all of you to help defray the publishing fees and help me get started. I'd
like to get the book published as soon as possible because the summer months here
are teeming with visitors and riders of the train who would love to take a small
memory home with them.
Thank you so much for considering whatever donation you might be able to give.
