Help Marcella to Start her Post Doc

Hello everyone, my name is Marcella. I am an exchange Ph.D. student from Brazil and through my passion for science I have dedicated the last years of my career to promote a real impact in breast cancer research. Currently, I am a research fellow at Harvard Medical School - Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, researching metabolomic approaches to the diagnosis, prognosis, and drug resistance assessment in breast cancer patients.

In the last year, I had to face a series of obstacles and challenges in order to continue my research for my Ph.D. Unfortunately, in the last few months, my situation has worsened a lot since my father passed away in March 2021 as a victim of COVID-19. I returned to Brazil in the vain attempt to provide some assistance, while he was hospitalized in intensive care, but he couldn’t survive few days after I arrived in Brazil. I had to bear all the costs of the funeral and all the other bureaucratic expenses, besides to having to deal with the immeasurable pain of a loss every day of someone irreplaceable.

I am so close to defending my thesis, unfortunately, there is no prospect of continuing with my research to validate our results and give progress to studies focusing on the post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy phase in a Post-Doc program. Even though in Brazil, I am part of the team at University of Campinas which is one of the best universities in Latin America, my country is currently plagued by an unprecedented serious political and economic crisis and offers negligible or even non-existent support to its researchers.

In order to be able to continue my research in Boston and follow for a post-doc in a more promising scenario, I need some financial support to stay in the U.S. next year until I get a scholarship from another funding agency. With your help, I will pay my rent, utilities and living expenses. Due to high expenses and the large exchange difference between Dollar and Brazilian Real (1 U.S. dollar around 6 Brazilian Real), and the fact that visa for foreign researchers does not allow me to work in any area other than academia. With many restrictions, living in Boston with personal funds is something extremely challenging.

In the scenario where we call for diversity and inclusion, underrepresentation in academic medicine is a latent and extremely important issue to reflect on. I am a woman, a Latin foreigner who would just like to be able to use all my determination and my talent to do my job in the best possible way and somehow impact the lives of so many women who suffer from this devastating disease.

Thousands of women with breast cancer need and deserve effective treatment.
An opportunity can change a story.

Thank you in advance for your support and trust.
