Hello,

My name is Marbella Estefanía Ramos García, and I am an Indigenous woman from Guatemala. I am writing to you with great respect to ask for your support in continuing my studies and fulfilling my dream of becoming a Systems Engineer.

I grew up in a family of five: my mother, my father, my sister, my little brother, and me. My family has a long lineage of being technological innovators in our town. My grandparents were the first to have a TV and VCR in town for a time, and invited others in the community to come and watch movies in our house for a small charge in order to gain funds to fund the studies of my mom and aunt. They built on from there to selling food and drinks for the movies in our house, to opening a small store, to buying our first refrigerator. This allowed them to start making and selling ice cream. This is the story of my family. Because of this, I have always been curious to learn how things work and how technology can help improve people's lives, especially in our Indigenous communities.

They have always been passionate about the importance of education for their children. My mother, a Spanish teacher, has been teaching tourists from the US and other countries for over 25 years. She especially has tried to break a long tradition of de-prioritizing education for girls in our community by showing her unwavering commitment to putting us through school. Unfortunately despite this, the costs of tuition, materials, and my basic needs are too high, and we cannot cover them all. I have watched my older sister start to attend medical school and am inspired to do the same, but supporting more than 1 child through this expensive process is just not possible for us right now.

I want to study Systems Engineering at Mariano Gálvez University, and I am very motivated to move forward. to do so, I would have to move to the city of Quetzaltenango (Xela), which is two hours from my home, and I will have to rent a room.

Therefore, with great humility, I ask for your help. Your support will allow me to pay for:

Books and study materials

Housing and basic expenses

I ask that you help me with whatever amount you can, so that I can continue my university studies. I want to study to help my family, my community, and to show that Indigenous women can also achieve their goals.

Mi nombre es Marbella Estefanía Ramos García, y soy una mujer indígena de Guatemala. Les escribo con mucho respeto para pedir su apoyo para continuar mis estudios y cumplir mi sueño de convertirme en Ingeniera en Sistemas.

Crecí en una familia de cinco: mi madre, mi padre, mi hermana, mi hermano pequeño y yo. Mi familia tiene una larga tradición de innovadores tecnológicos en nuestro pueblo. Mis abuelos fueron los primeros en tener un televisor y una videograbadora en el pueblo durante un tiempo, e invitaban a otros miembros de la comunidad a ver películas en nuestra casa por una pequeña tarifa para recaudar fondos para financiar los estudios de mi madre y mi tía. A partir de ahí, comenzaron a vender comida y bebidas para las películas en casa, a abrir una pequeña tienda y a comprar nuestro primer refrigerador. Esto les permitió empezar a hacer y vender helados. Esta es la historia de mi familia. Por eso, siempre he tenido curiosidad por aprender cómo funcionan las cosas y cómo la tecnología puede ayudar a mejorar la vida de las personas, especialmente en nuestras comunidades indígenas.

Siempre les ha apasionado la importancia de la educación para sus hijos. Mi madre, profesora de español, lleva más de 25 años enseñando a turistas de Estados Unidos y otros países. En particular, ha intentado romper con la larga tradición de restarle prioridad a la educación de las niñas en nuestra comunidad, demostrando su inquebrantable compromiso con la educación de nuestras hijas. Desafortunadamente, a pesar de esto, los costos de la matrícula, los materiales y mis necesidades básicas son demasiado altos, y no podemos cubrirlos todos. He visto a mi hermana mayor empezar a estudiar medicina y me siento inspirada a hacer lo mismo, pero apoyar a más de una hija en este costoso proceso simplemente no nos es posible ahora mismo.

Tengo el deseo estudiar Ingeniería en Sistemas en la Universidad Mariano Gálvez, y estoy muy motivada para seguir adelante. Pero desafortunadamente los gastos de inscripción, materiales y mis necesidades básicas son altos, y no podemos cubrir la totalidad ya que por la distancia tendré que mudarme a la ciudad de xela que esta a 2 horas de mi casa por lo que tendré que pagar una habitación

Por eso, con mucha humildad, solicito su ayuda. Su apoyo me permitirá pagar:
