Dear friends and chosen family,

This summer, our beloved Mar was diagnosed with cancer, stage 4 classical Hodgkin lymphoma.

As a queer and Arab person, Mar has consistently been denied adequate healthcare. Instead, they were met with medical gaslighting and gatekeeping. Although this diagnosis has been a relief, it has also been a heavy burden.

Since 2023, Mar had seen numerous doctors for extreme pain, mobility issues and even numerous lumps all over their body - regardless, they were repeatedly told it was nothing serious. After a night spent in the emergency room, we have since learned that these were symptoms of the cancer spreading.

Following a biopsy, we learned that Mar’s cancer has progressed to stage 4 lymphoma as it’s now spread to the bones.

Mar is now embarking on a treatment journey that will span at least seven months, including chemotherapy, and an extended recovery period during which they will not be able to work. This cancer + treatment makes Mar prone to getting sick more severely, which can delay treatments.

In August, Mar faced unexpected financial challenges related to the diagnosis. In order to accommodate new mobility needs and control infection risks, Mar had to move into a new apartment and paid double the rent for the month of August. In addition to this, more costs were generated while trying to furnish the new apartment. Mar’s mother has had to stop working and relocate to Montreal to act as primary caretaker, further straining their finances.

This GoFundMe aims to alleviate the financial stress for Mar to focus on healing.

Cet été, notre cher Mar a reçu un diagnostic de cancer, un lymphome hodgkinien classique de stade 4.

En tant que personne queer et arabe, Mar s'est toujours vu refuser des soins de santé adéquats. Après des années à faire face à des formes de ‘gaslighting’ médical, ce diagnostic a été à la fois un soulagement et un lourd fardeau.

Mar entame maintenant un parcours de traitement d’au moins sept mois, comprenant la chimiothérapie et une longue période de convalescence pendant laquelle Mar ne serait pas en mesure de travailler. Le cancer et les traitements affaiblissent fortement son système immunitaire et rendent Mar plus vulnérable aux infections sévères, ce qui peut retarder les soins.

En août, Mar a dû faire face à des défis financiers imprévus liés à son diagnostic. Afin de répondre à ses nouveaux besoins de mobilité et de limiter les risques d’infection, Mar a dû déménager dans un nouvel appartement, et a dû payer un double loyer pour le mois d’août.

À cela s’ajoutent les frais liés à l’aménagement de ce nouveau logement. La mère de Mar prend également du temps en arrêt de travail et a dû déménager à Montréal pour lui offrir les soins nécessaires, ce qui représente une charge financière supplémentaire pour la famille.

Cette cagnotte GoFundMe vise à alléger cette pression financière afin que Mar puisse se concentrer pleinement sur sa guérison.
