MY DAD'S FULL STORY. PLEASE HELP.
SUMMARY OF ISSUES AT THE BOTTOM
In October 2023, Mansour Khatib was admitted to the hospital for Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) meaning his heart is not strong enough to meet the circulation needs of the body. Because of this, he retains a lot of fluid / water weight, so much so that he cannot move because his legs, arms, and stomach are swelling with fluid. Last year he was admitted to the hospital where they gave him lasik, a medication meant to help secrete/filter the excess fluid.
A year later in October 2024, he was admitted for the same condition, unable to walk or move and furthermore unable to eat/drink due to the swelling all over his body. Within a two week period, my dad lost ~90 lbs in water weight, and even more in muscle / fatty tissue, but was discharged early due to a lack of health insurance.
Once he got home, he had an extreme allergic reaction to the lasik medication, causing deep ulcers and blisters up and down his entire leg (see pictures). He could no longer continue to take the medication as a result, but he also still needed to get rid of excess fluid. He could still not eat, or walk, and began experiencing excruciating pain due to the open wounds. He was admitted to the hospital a second time.
After spending another 11 days in hospital care where the bandages for his legs were changed TWICE daily, he was again discharged early. An at-home nurse was meant to come to the house every other day to change the bandages on his legs. However at home, he was still unable to stand or care for himself relying on his roommate Don and his son Ely to bring him food, water, meals, and attempt to motivate him to stand up.
On November 10th, while sleeping my dad fell out of the chair that he had been restricted to for 5 days (he had been discharged only 6 days ago). He had not been able to use the bathroom, was refusing to eat/drink anything, his body was constantly shaking/tremoring, and had begun hallucinating, seeing people or objects that were not there. His kidneys failed and he was admitted to the hospital a third time.
After yet another 10 days in the hospital, he was once again discharged with his kidneys in working condition, now properly filtering out the excess fluid caused by the CHF. Leg ulcers still deep and requiring great care, Ely and another at-home nurse were only able to change his bandages ONCE daily. This was not often enough, or even early enough, as the entirety of his legs were significantly infected within a a day or two of discharge. With the infection spreading and worsening, his body began retaining fluid again, and his legs swelled up again with now infected ulcers. He again refused to eat/drink, began hallucinating, and experienced more intense, constant tremors / shakes. All this not even a week after being discharged the third time.
On November 25th, he was admitted to the hospital a fourth time where we were told the infection in his legs was getting into his bloodstream and potentially spreading, leading to a risk of sepsis. This, and news that his kidneys were failing a second time which allowed excessive amounts of potassium to build up, increasing the risk of his heart stopping.
SUMMARY
Mansour cannot drink too much water because he will retain too much fluid due to CHF and be unable to move or eat. But if he doesn't get enough water, his kidneys could easily fail him a third time as they are already not working efficiently. When kidneys do not work properly, they will not filter the bloodstream properly, leading to the failure of organs such as the liver and pancreas. Most urgently, the build up of potassium in his bloodstream would lead to the cardiac arrest. Furthermore, the infection requires antibiotics to avoid spreading and going into septic shock.
The doctors agree my father needs 24/7 care, and would not survive another early discharge. Not only do his wounds need to be constantly treated, but he needs to rebuild the muscles to walk and have his meals carefully prepared. With the weight loss and lack of eating, he has become incredibly thin and weak. We are clearly not well enough equipped to do this at home. He must be sent to a rehabilitative care facility, however due to a lack of health care coverage, costs for such a facility are high, not to mention the staggering almost two months in and out of the hospital/ICU.
Mansour is currently being taken of in the ICU and is thankfully doing well, in a stable condition with the constant care of the nurses. We are applying for Medicaid and attempting to raise funds. All funds will be used for his medical expenses and other treatment/care: hospital visits, medication, rehab/physical therapy, food, at-home nurses, care facility costs, and any other expenses he has been unable to pay due to lack of work from his injuries/condition. Please help, I don't know what else to do, anything helps. Thank you!
