Our Situation
On September 5th, I returned to Philadelphia after my mother suffered a severe brain injury. After nearly two months, she is currently in stable condition in a rehabilitation facility. However, while there have been early signs of recovery—such as small movements and the beginning efforts of speech—our situation has become increasingly difficult.
During this time, I (Manny) have returned back from NYC believing family support would bring stability. However, the situation has become unpredictable and emotionally difficult about care decisions and the future of our mother's home, which has caused tension and uncertainty about where we belong.
We deeply love our family and are grateful for any help we've received. Still, the ongoing stress, lack of clear communication, and repeated threats of displacement have made it clear that our current environment is not sustainable for our emotional or mental well-being.
Why We're Asking for Help
We are raising $10,000 as an emergency fund to relocate and rebuild our stability in New York City, where I previously had stable housing and employment. This move would allow my sister and me to begin fresh in a stable, supportive environment while continuing to care for our mother froma healthier distance.
As she turns 16 in December, she will be exploring her educational and personal options to initiate her emancipation. She will be guided by professionals and with her well-being at the center of every decision. My goal is to ensure she has access to safe housing, consistent schooling, and community programs that encourage her growth – from her interests in piano and basketball to mentorship opportunities through local youth and art initiatives.
For my part, I will be returning to work and continuing my creative career to sustain us both.
How Contributions Will Help
All donations will go directly toward:
- Relocation and moving expenses
- First month's rent and security deposit in NYC
- Transportation and essential living costs
- Legal and administrative fees related to guardianship/emancipation guidance
- Continued support for our mother's care coordination
In Closing
Our lives changed overnight, and while we're doing everything we can to hold things together, the escalating stress, instability, and lack of support here in Philadelphia are becoming unsustainable. Relocating will give us the chance to breathe, rebuild, and focus on healing – both emotionally and practically.
Any contribution—no matter the size—will directly support our relocation, housing, living costs, and the legal process ahead. We will continue to share updates and are deeply grateful for any support, shares, or words of encouragement.
Thank you for standing with us.
