I am Alicia Calcaño, the mother of Eliecer Gutierrez Calcaño, a well-known member of the mammalogy community in North and South America. 

Eliecer needs your help now. He is in the hospital in critical condition at Santa Maria, Brazil.  On September 15th, he suffered both a heart attack and a stroke. Previous to this, Eliecer was already in the hospital receiving treatment for ongoing septicemia and endocarditis. In the future, he will need mitral valve heart surgery due to damage sustained from the endocarditis.

Eliecer's case is medically and financially complex. He is living in a foreign country (after having to leave Venezuela) and will need to stay several months in the hospital in recovery and for surgery. The medical expenses will greatly exceed the coverage of Eliecer's insurance and our means. Starting October 1st, he is out of payroll and his income depends on Brazilian government assistance approvals, which will barely cover insurance and some bills.

Eliécer is a rising star of South American mammalogy. His research covers empirical and conceptual aspects of taxonomy, systematics, biogeography, and evolutionary biology. His research activities include several mammal groups, such as opossums, rodents, bats, and deer. He was awarded in 2017 with the Oliver Pearson Award by the American Society of Mammalogists. Following Gofundsme regulations we need to inform you Eliecer's only brother, Jose Gutierrez Calcano, is receiving all the campaign funds directly and make it available to me to cover all the costs associated with Eliecer's recovery.
