Help Mami Freda find a home
Donation protected
My mother Freda Medrano is a hard working American citizen, she's a sister, mother, daughter, friend and a very active member of her community and church.
I'm trying to help raise $20,000 to help pay for a temporary apartment in New York, pay for her storage fees and replace some of her furniture that was left behind.
On January 2, 2021 after enduring what 2020 had already given us, there was a fire in her apartment building. The fire was on the top floor but water used to shut the fire down destroyed every floor under it. The building was immediately deemed hazardous and they could not go back in, a few days later when she went to grab some of her stuff the walls in her apartment had already started to be ripped apart. Her bed, furniture, clothing, kitchen wear and even her flowers which she loves so much was all over the place.
After a month and two weeks of waiting on building owners or managers to give her an answer about her future about her home I told her we should take matters into our own hands. She has lived there for 29 years, it's where my sister and I grew up.
2020 hit her so hard and I'm afraid something like this could break her, she's been bouncing from place to place while continuing to work. We recently dropped her things at storage and have started looking for a temporary or permanent home until we know if her home will be given back to her.
The downside of being poor and having a language barrier is being taken advantage of, right now she is just a number, a dollar sign and in my mind a 63 year old woman who has worked here whole life, paying taxes, helping her community should be treated with some dignity.
I'm not asking but begging my friends, colleagues, and family to donate or share this link. If you know this sweet lady you know she has a huge heart, she will give you her last plate of food, or the shirt on her back.
My mom helps to run a yearly even at her church, she spends days and weeks leading up to this event making tamales, tacos and getting donations to make sure everyone who attended has a great time.
If you can find it in your heart to help I'd appreciate it.
Thanks - Jorge
