Help for Maria Elena Cuellar Salmeron - ALS

As some of you already know, our dear Maria Elena (Mami) has been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a terminal, progressive neuromuscular disease that causes the loss of all muscle control. Over time, as the body's muscles break down, ALS affects basic tasks like walking, speaking, eating, breathing and more. For Mami, a persistent shortness of breath and weakness in her right arm in the fall of 2021 led to some tests, which led to us receiving this devastating and unexpected diagnosis in March of 2022.

Since then, we’ve been trying to just keep up with the constant physical and emotional challenges that ALS brings. As her full-time caregivers, Papi and I have been by her side the entire time. Mami’s symptoms have progressed quickly and she is entirely dependent on us. We are so grateful to everyone who has asked how they can help. We are humbly asking for donations to help relieve the array of costs and financial stress that also come with ALS, so our family can focus on spending precious, quality time with Mami. Because there is no cure for ALS (we don’t even know what causes it), the only thing we can do is take steps to improve her quality of life. We plan to use your donations to help with Mami’s continuous medical and supportive care, hire caregivers to help her day-to-day life, and help cover Mami’s relocation to her native El Salvador, where she has asked to be.

Mami is a loving and dedicated mom and wife who selflessly sacrificed so much to give us everything we’ve ever needed or wanted. She has been our biggest blessing, and we’re determined to be the same for her through this battle. Every ALS case is different, and while we don’t know how Mami’s disease will progress from here, we are doing everything in our power to make her as happy and comfortable as possible - now.

Como algunos de ustedes ya saben, nuestra querida María Elena (mami) ha sido diagnosticada de ELA (esclerosis lateral amiotrófica), una enfermedad neuromuscular progresiva y terminal, que provoca la pérdida de todo el control muscular. Con el tiempo, a medida que los músculos del cuerpo se descomponen, la ELA afecta a las funciones básicas como caminar, hablar, comer, respirar y más. En el caso de mi mami, una persistente falta de aliento y debilidad en su brazo derecho en el otoño de 2021 hizo que se le hicieran algunas pruebas, que nos llevaron a recibir este devastador e inesperado diagnóstico en marzo de 2022.

Desde entonces, hemos tratado de mantenernos al día con los constantes desafíos físicos y emocionales que trae la ELA. Los síntomas de mi mami han progresado rápidamente y depende totalmente de mi papi, José, y de mí. Los dos hemos estado a su lado todo el tiempo, como sus cuidadores a tiempo completo. Estamos muy agradecidos a todos los que han preguntado cómo pueden ayudar. Pedimos humildemente donaciones para ayudar a aliviar la serie de costes y el estrés financiero que también vienen con la ELA, para que nuestra familia pueda centrarse en pasar tiempo de calidad con mi mami.

Como no hay cura para la ELA (ni siquiera sabemos qué la causa), lo único que podemos hacer es tomar medidas para mejorar su calidad de vida. Planeamos utilizar sus donaciones para ayudar con los cuidados médicos y de apoyo continuos de Mami, para contratar cuidadores que la ayuden en su día a día, y también para ayudar a cubrir el traslado de mi mami a su El Salvador natal, donde ella ha pedido estar.

Mi mami es una madre y esposa cariñosa y dedicada, que se sacrificó tanto para darnos todo lo que hemos necesitado o deseado. Ha sido la mayor bendición para nosotros y estamos decididos a ser lo mismo para ella durante esta batalla. Cada caso de ELA es diferente, y aunque no sabemos cómo evolucionará la enfermedad de mi mami, estamos haciendo todo lo que está en nuestra mano para hacerla lo más feliz y cómoda posible - ahora.
