Mamey is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of Dominico-Haitian music and an improvisational exploration of its roots. Since Mamey's debut in Brussels in 2023, we have brought our music to venues throughout the Midwest, the East Coast, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, and we are now hard at work to release our debut album.
I have been inspired to bring my American and Dominican creative and cultural experiences into conversation. My compositions, infused with classical, jazz, and experimental/free music, delve beyond popular genres like merengue and bachata, and embrace lesser-known styles such as Bamboulá, Sarandunga de Baní, Salve, and Gagá.
We are 90% done with the recording process thanks to seed money from a Pathways to Jazz grant, but there is still a lot of editing, mixing, and mastering work to be done to bring the project to fruition and launch this album in early 2026.
I am extremely excited and fortunate to be collaborating on the album with wonderful musicians, who I have had the pleasure to record in Chicago, Baltimore, New York and the Dominican Republic:
