Last night, my mother, Phyllis “Mama Rose” Haughton, lost everything in a fire in her longtime home at 425 Sterling Place in Brooklyn — where she lived for 53 years. She did not have renters insurance, and now must start over. Phyllis came to America from Jamaica in 1970 with her husband in search of opportunity. In 1980, he was killed, leaving her to raise her family alone. Through faith and determination, she reunited with her three daughters in 1983 and sponsored the rest of her family in 1984 — all on a caretaker’s salary. She later helped put her daughters through college, raising nurses, an entrepreneur, and a homemaker. Known as “Miss Rose” or “Mama Rose,” she opened her home to everyone. Holidays brought 40–50 guests into her two-bedroom apartment for unforgettable Jamaican meals. There was always enough food and love — and she never charged a dime. Her only rule: bring peace, love, and dessert if you’d like. Today she has lost her home, belongings, and decades of memories. We’re asking for your help to support her housing, clothing, and essentials as she rebuilds. Thank you for your love and support.
