On Saturday July 13th our mom was rushed to the hospital after experiencing severe chest pain. They took some x-rays, ran some tests, and soon confirmed our worst fears—she had a heart attack. They rushed her in for a cardiac catheterization and soon told us that they found an artery that had 80% of the blood flow restricted. Thankfully, they were able to place a permanent stent and believe that she will fully recover and not have any long term complications.
It’s just the four of us as a family now and we’re stronger than ever. Haley is working full-time while still recovering from her stroke in March, Ashley is working multiple summer jobs and set up with her first official teaching job for the fall, and Joshua is still at school and working for the physics department. We are all doing everything we can to help financially, but Mom still has to work 70+ hours a week just to cover her mortgage and bills. Unfortunately, due to her being employed as an independent contractor, she does not have any health insurance, benefits to take time off of work, nor does she qualify for any kind of government assistance.
This is where sadly have to ask for your help. We currently have no idea what lies ahead for recovery costs and what our immediate future looks like. What matters most now is getting some financial security so she can focus on taking as much time as she needs to recover without having to worry about her expenses. All donations received will be going toward hospital bills, medications, and making up for missed wages for all of the work that will be missed.
She is our best friend and the hardest working woman we have ever known. She has spent her entire life providing for and taking care of us, and now it is our turn to take care of her.
To those who have taken the time to read this, thank you. Whether you know her as Dorothy, the Magazine Sale Lady, The Bookfair lady, the Orchestra mom, or just Mama Kooistra, we thank you for everything and all of the support at this time.
