Hi. You may know me as Malmrose Projects if you've seen my content online. There is a big update in my life: I am moving across the country to attend Drexel University in Philadelphia, for a Master's Program. I'm going to be going part-time (at least at first), and a combination of scholarships and student loans should be able to cover the cost of admission. However, there are several additional costs that I need to try to save up money for, including logistical costs of the move and initial housing costs (rent, deposits, etc).
For this reason, I'm reaching out to as many people as I can in the hope that I can raise some money to make this journey into grad school more feasible. I've set the goal at $5,000 (roughly 3,000 for rent deposit, plus roughly 2,000 for additional costs of the move, including some extra money for rent while I look for work in the area). That said, any amount helps, and if you are willing to contribute, it will be greatly appreciated!
Some information that might help convince you to support me:
I have had significant success in Academia prior to grad school. My very first essay in college was published in the American Sociological Association's quarterly magazine Contexts. Since then, I've given several guest lectures and talks at my community college, and gave multiple presentations at the Pacific Sociological Association's 2019 conference in Oakland, presenting research on how the internet has been used to navigate transgender identity in semi-public online spaces.
Since moving to State College, I conducted multiple Capstone Research projects, including an 85 page in-depth look at how 1980's popular media served to normalize the ideological perspectives of Reagan's administration, using both quantitative and qualitative analysis.
I'm going to be attending the Communication, Culture and Media program in pursuit of a Master's Degree, with the intent to eventually pursue a PhD. My hope is to specialize in an interdisciplinary approach to media and culture, combining elements of social science, history, and communication/journalism.
I will be studying how cultural narratives in the US normalize violence at every scale, with particular attention focused towards violence in the name of America's interests (overseas and against vulnerable members of our communities).
I believe that American Exceptionalism is an ethics framework that deems that which is "Unamerican" as a threat to the moral structure of society, and this nebulous "Unamerican" status changes as America's national and international interests shift under different administrations.
I hope to explore these ideas in grad school and flesh them out through pursuit of a PhD. My career ambitions are to develop new research and theories on culture that I can carry into the public sphere by any means available, be it professional journalism, formal academic research positions, or even continued content creation (likely as a side-gig in addition to a more formal career).
Drexel is an incredible opportunity to achieve my dreams. And if you like what I do or see promise in where I'm headed, please consider donating! Any amount helps!
