I’m raising funds for a dear friend who is currently facing eviction after falling three months behind on rent. Malky is an incredible mother, the most loving friend, and a deeply generous person who has shown up for others again and again. She has campaigned for single moms numerous times, and raised thousands of dollars for others when she herself had very little. Asking for help does not come easily to her. Due to a difficult childhood and being estranged from family, Malky does not have the kind of safety net many of us rely on in moments like this. Like many who get divorced in her community of origin, Malky was coerced into signing an agreement that allowed her ex to pay the bare minimum in child support. Ten years later, there’s been no adjustment to the meager amount she receives, despite the rising cost of living and raising a child, and her ex’s increased income. Living paycheck to paycheck has never afforded Malky the means to even bring the matter to court for reconsideration. Despite working hard - at times, juggling multiple jobs - and doing everything she can to provide stability for her child, a series of challenges has led to a temporary but urgent housing crisis. For several months, Malky experienced multiple health issues that interfered with her daily functioning and required exorbitant out of pocket costs for specialists. While the health issues were resolved, the financial burden that accrued did not. The funds raised will go directly toward covering back rent and helping her secure stable housing so she and her child can remain safe and housed.
