Help Malis Seek Safety and Press Freedom
Donation protected
Hello,
My name is Malis, and I’m a journalist from Cambodia seeking political asylum in the United States. For the past few years, I’ve dedicated my work to reporting the truth and amplifying voices that are often silenced. Most recently, I’ve been working with Voice of America (VOA), an independent news organization funded by the U.S. Congress and based in Washington, DC.
As an outspoken journalist committed to press freedom, I’ve faced increasing threats because of my work. The current U.S. administration is now in the process of dismantling VOA—a move that was openly welcomed by Cambodia’s former prime minister, a leader known for silencing dissent and restricting media freedoms. His praise of VOA’s dismantling makes clear how dangerous this moment is for journalists like me.
It’s not lost on me that I’m now seeking asylum in the very country where the news organization that gave me a platform is being shut down. The irony is painful. But I still believe in the values that VOA stood for—freedom of the press, access to truth, and the right to speak without fear. That’s why I’m still here, asking for your help.
I no longer believe I can safely or freely practice journalism in Cambodia. Going back would mean giving up not only my career but also my voice—and possibly my safety. Applying for asylum is my only option for a future where I can live and work without fear of persecution.
But the asylum process is complex and expensive. I need to hire an immigration attorney to guide me through it and represent me in court. The fee is 8,000 USD. On top of that, I will not be legally allowed to work for at least six months while I wait for a work permit. That means I have no income during one of the most difficult times of my life.
If you care about press freedom, human rights, or simply want to help someone rebuild a life rooted in truth and safety, please consider donating or sharing this campaign. I’m humbly asking for your support. Every donation will go toward legal fees, basic living expenses, and staying afloat while I go through this long and uncertain journey. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing this page with your network—your voice can help carry mine further.
Thank you for standing with me. Your support reminds me that even in uncertain times, truth and solidarity still matter.
With deep gratitude,
Malis
